CHANTAL CORRIVEAU / ESTHETICIAN
Name / Location: Chantal Corriveau, Upstate New York.
Occupation: NY State Licensed Esthetician, Makeup Artist, beauty blogger/youtuber for Askderm, and full-time Cat Lady!
What is your day-to-day like?
Every day is different for me, which I love. I could be traveling from client to client with my table and wax pot in tow, sculpting brows and doing Brazilian waxes. If I am working at Askderm for the day, I could be writing blog posts, doing a mini-photo shoot, filming a video for Youtube or in a product knowledge class. During the spring and summer months I am busier on weekends doing makeup for weddings.
What are your current favorite beauty products?
Anything ACURE: I am OBSESSED! Nothing beats an eco-friendly, cruelty-free line that has products that deliver! Their oil control moisturizer is a must have for acne prone skin. I love their body washes, lotions, and the shampoos & conditioners are amazing. Their products are also at a price point everyone can afford, nothing over 30 dollars!
WELEDA Wild Rose Deodorant: Over the past few years I have really been trying hard to give up anti-perspirants as more and more studies come out about the safety of aluminum and the link between anti-perspirants and breast cancers. Most natural or mineral deodorants really do nothing for me. WELEDA seems to know what they are doing, this is the best natural deodorant I have ever used. Here’s hoping I make it through the warmer months and can give up traditional anti-perspirants completely!
FOREO Luna Mini: I love this skin-cleansing device and hope to be able to integrate the Luna Pro into my facial services with clients soon. It is gentle enough for everyday use. It is made from silicone so you do not have to worry about it growing bacteria, unlike the bristled brush heads of other cleansing devices. It holds a charge for about half a year, yet is still an effective sonic technology tool.
Tarte Be Mattenificent Colored Clay Palette: I think there is something so sophisticated about a matte eyeshadow look. This palette is an easy go-to, six shadows, a blush and two super dark shades that can be used wet or dry as liners or shadows.
Limecrime Velvetines: These liquid lipsticks dry to a completely matte finish (hmm..personal pattern here). I just ordered Wicked (a deep burgundy) and cannot wait for its arrival. I also think it is really important to support independent makeup companies. These lippies are longwearing. I can make it through a dinner out or a dance party with friends without it smudging out of place. The colors are super bright and bold. They definitely need to be paired with confidence!
Briogeo Curl Charisma Conditioner: Formulated without parabens, silicones or phthalates, this conditioner was developed to encourage your own hair’s natural curl formation. I comb my hair, while rinsing it out and let it air dry without brushing it again. I cannot believe the ringlets I have!
What are your "cannot live without" beauty products?
I do not know if I would be able to survive without: Jane Iredale’s PurePressed Base, Tweezerman Tweezers, Shu Uemura eyelash curler, coconut oil and lastly sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen!
What are your biggest beauty secrets?
Sunscreen. This should not be a secret, if I could shout it from the rooftops I would! Lately, people I meet for the first time have been guessing that I am between 22 and 24. Holy ego boost, I will be 30 in a few months..eek! I have to chalk this up to staying out of the sun. It still boggles my mind, how misinformed people are when it comes to UV damage. It reminds me of how miseducated people use to be about cigarettes. “I only smoke socially when drinking.” Is practically equivalent to “ I only go tanning once a year.” I see some of my clients on a two-week basis. While I am removing hair from your face or body, I am taking mental notes about moles and other skin issues you may have. I watch for changes or signs of something more serious. While legally I cannot diagnosis a condition as serious as skin cancer, I can, have and will convince you to go to the dermatologist. Unfortunately I have an excellent tract record- every client that I believed had a cancerous lesion has come back to thank me and tell me I was right. That is a horrible thing to be right about.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
AskDerm: Seeing as I work there, it is very dangerous that I can hand over my credit card to one of the girls in customer service and shop to my hearts content. There are over 200 product lines available. If you are on the site click on the upper right side link labeled “Skin facts”, that is where you will find my blog posts.
W2Beauty: Korean BB creams are superb, but you have to make sure you are not buying a counterfeit product. I am also a sucker for kawaii, super cute packaging from brands like Tony Moly. I mean, can you pass on a facial spritz that comes in a bunny shaped bottle? I think not!
Sephora: I would probably never step foot in the mall if it was not for this place. I love Tarte, Illamasqua, Anastasia of Beverly Hills and O.C.C. (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics).
What are you looking forward to this spring?
I am beginning to believe spring is simply a myth and will never come to New York! But if it does ever arrive, I am excited for eating seasonal produce- fresh peas, leeks, and radishes. Good skin starts from the inside out! I am also ready for bright makeup, especially on the lips. I am carrying over my favorite orange lip look from last summer, as it seems to be getting more attention as a trend this year. The key to this look is to keep the rest of the face simple. Pair it with a strong brow and a cat flick liner, or my favorite- orange lip paired with matte taupe shadow, no liner except white or nude on the water line and lots of mascara.
What is the best way for someone to contact you with business inquires?
The core of my business has been built from the ground up, through word of mouth. Long time clients refer me to others and that is how I give out my phone number. For my personal business I can be reached through email: firstname.lastname@example.org. For business inquiries concerning Askderm, I can be reached at email@example.com
What is your best advice for women working for themselves or thinking about starting their own business?
Take your passion and your craft seriously, but never take yourself too seriously! One of the best compliments I get is that people think I am funny. This comes in handy for me, as I use a lot of self-deprecating humor to get me through being uncomfortable. Being photographed and being filmed is really nerve racking for me. Never stop learning! Whether that’s taking classes or learning from your peers. And lastly, never think you are better than anyone else. This is a look that looks good on no one!!
